“If I win, I'm a prodigy. If I lose, then I'm crazy. That's the way history is written.”
Artemis Fowl the Second is a 12-year-old genius, who also happens to come from a rich but criminal family. However, his father had wasted most of their fortune and disappeared, so Artemis was left with the Fowl Manor, his bodyguard, and his mother. Along with his small fortune, which he used to gain more money. His bodyguard comes from the Butler family, who are a family of martial arts masters trained to accompany the Fowl family. A pairing of a Fowl and a Butler lasted for their entire life; nothing would separate a Fowl from a Butler, or vise versa. Artemis' latest scheme to gain his family fortune back involved locating creatures that were believed to be non-existent. However, Artemis had found multiple stories of their sightings, and searched for their existence. During his search, he had met face-to-face with one of these so-called creatures, specifically a fairy, and had struck a bargain with it. This gave Artemis insight on fairies, their laws, and their daily lives. This was where he constructed his strategy to hold a fairy for ransom. In the beginning, Artemis Fowl is shown as a brilliant boy, whose brain had affected his personality to become cold and calculating. He held no compassion for anything, except his close family, like his father and his mother. However, it is shown in the story that Artemis had gave up attempting to find his father, and his mother was long gone from this world, although she was still alive. All throughout the book, Artemis remains the same, until the end, where certain events happen and his child side is shown; the side that has always craved affection and attention from his parents. This book contains action, humor, and the occasional suspense when you have no idea what will happen next and is dying to find out.
