“A monkey glances up and sees a banana, and that's as far as he looks. A visionary looks up and sees the moon.”
Not only did Conor Broekhart know that he wanted to fly, he was born flying: on a hot air balloon. Because his father was the king's bodyguard, Conor often played with the king's daughter, Princess Isabella. However one day, he witnesses the assassination of the king, and so he gets blamed for the king's death. Which, ultimately, gets him thrown into jail, mining for diamonds. Coincidentally, the only way to get out of this prison is by flying, which would be easy, except aircrafts were not created yet. So Conor spends all his free time in prison trying to come up with machine designs.
One thing I love the most about this book is the characterization of Conor. One trait that I believe all main characters should have is intelligence. Artemis Fowl, a book I reviewed earlier and by the same author as Airman, also had a genius main character. Although Conor may not be a straight-up genius like Artemis, Conor is extremely smart in his own way. He gets through hard situations, and he continues to carry hope within him.
